Qloudlab Is Planning To Use Smartphone Screens To Test Blood

Healthcare is all set to be revolutionised by smart devices in the not so distant future.

Patients who rely on anticoagulants to limit the formation of blood clots are required to make regular trips to the hospital for monitoring. Hoping to put an end to this tedious and time consuming process, a startup named Qloudlab is developing a portable blood test that makes use of the unique properties of a smartphone's capacitive touchscreen.

According to phys.org report, the test works by disrupting the constant charge maintained by a capacitive touchscreen when blood coagulates. That's similar to the way charge is disrupted when you run your finger over the screen.

A drop of blood is introduced onto a thin highly-engineered film of plastic, where the blood coagulates. This disrupts the charge on the screen in a very specific way, which can be analysed by an accompanying app.

The software, then sends the results of the test to a physician who can diagnose the patient's condition. The technology is still in its nascent stage, but its creators are aiming to roll-out the product by 2015.

Testing blood using a smartphone is just another way in which mobile devices will drive the healthcare sector in the future. You can already purchase smartbands and other such wearable devices which monitor your heart rate and other such parameters to diagnose your fitness levels.
