Upcoming OnePlus One Flagship To Go Big On Display Tech

The handset will feature a 5.5 inch display, which is more durable and power-efficient than conventional panels.

If there is one factor that has disappointed many at the MWC 2014, it would have to be the mobile displays. While we kept our fingers crossed expecting at least one manufacturer to show off a QHD display, there was just no sign of it at the event.

Later, Oppo did bring some cheer to the Android camp by confirming a QHD version of its upcoming Oppo Find 7. Now, it's the new handset manufacturer OnePlus, which does not seem to holding back on anything. CEO, Pete Lau revealed via the official OnePlus Blog that apart from the already impressive battery specs of its upcoming handset; they will also be innovating on the display front.

The display of the OnePlus One will be a 5.5-inch Full HD one and will be built by Japan Display Inc — a joint venture by Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi. The display will feature Touch on Lens (TOL) technology that eliminates the air gap between the touch sensor and the display panel. TOL are also said to be 300% more shatterproof than conventional OGS displays.

Also included is CABC and DRAM technology which senses what’s going on the screen, and accordingly conserves less power.

Another interesting tip that Lau wrote about on the blog is that we should not expect QHD displays right now since they're simply overkill. He goes on to mention that the QHD resolutions consume too much power with their real-estate and graphics performance, making them unreasonable for mobile handsets. Moreover, the difference between them is very minimal, which could be the reason why even companies such as Samsung and Apple are not taking any big strides in cell phone display resolutions just yet.
