HTC Bets On Cheaper Smartphones Hoping To Turn Around Fortunes

Will focus on mid-tier market to boost sales.

HTC was always known for making premium smartphones. More like the iPhone of the Android world, building phones that were made of finely crafted aluminium with using precision building techniques. But, when tough times come, one has to bend and cater to larger audience — the middle segment—a spot which Samsung and Nokia have been riding on for years.

HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang told Reuters news agency that the company would now focus on the mid-segment a space which the premium smartphone maker has not tapped into for long. It’s a segment which many premium smartphone maker’s (even Apple) fall back on when their profits begin to dip. The Chairwoman also said that since the focus last year was solely on the flagships, they missed out on a huge chunk of the mid-tier market. Do keep in mind that this is not the budget segment that she referred to.

It’s a growing trend event with companies like Apple who churned out the iPhone 5C last year in a failed attempt to sell more phones in the mid-segment.

Our hopes are on HTC, to build a well-designed smartphones that bring out their design philosophy into everyday usable devices that reach out to a wider audience.
