Anonymous Retaliates Against MegaUpload Crackdown

Takes down RIAA, MPAA, and US government websites.

 

Even as the prospect of the proposed SOPA \ PIPA bills being passed diminishes in the face of widespread protests, that still hasn't stopped US federal prosecutors from cracking down on the evil scourge of noble media houses - the internet. SOPA or no SOPA, the US Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have shut down MegaUpload.com - a popular file-sharing website. Seven employees of the company, including founder Kim Dotcom (born Kim Schmitz), have been arrested for knowingly abetting piracy.

As expected, Anonymous has launched a co-ordinated attack on all parties involved in or supporting the clampdown. This includes government arms such as the US Justice Department and Copyright Office, as well as SOPA lobbyists such as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The attacks are being publicised through the Twitter hashtag #OpMegaUpload through the AnonOps account.

Draconian government policies and hacktivist resistance aside, the demise of MegaUpload - and the countless terabytes of user data along with it - underscores the dangerous nature of cloud storage. Hopefully, you have offline backups of the data you'd placed on MegaUpload.
