Army Chief Launches Eyewatch On Army Day

New mobile app is your personal panic button.

 

India's Chief of Army Staff, General VK Singh unveiled a new mobile app known as Eyewatch, which aims to serve as a personal panic button. The app was launched yesterday on the occasion of Army Day. Developed by Indianeye Security Private Limited, this app works with BlackBerry, Android, and selected Nokia Symbian S60 smartphones, in addition to a browser-based interface on desktop computers.

Once installed, this app can trigger multiple alerts, via SMS and email, to your selected emergency contacts such as family doctor, police, lawyer, etc. What's more, pressing the panic button transmits the last conversation on the device along with an automatically-generated photo or video stream. Using multiple geo-locating methods, the user's location is tracked even if the device is in motion.

To download the app, you have to create a user ID through a free registration form. The form requires your full name, email, gender, date of birth, mobile number, and country in your account details. As a part of the emergency response contact (ERC) details, you can provide mobile numbers and email addresses of two contacts, in addition to providing their relation to you. Once the account is created, you can add other information including residential, medical, and employer details.

Other features of the app include a one-touch SOS button to alert user's ERC, track the user until he \ she reaches safety, and automatical dialling of the ERC numbers. It also records the devices battery and network signal strength and displays them on the Eyewatch Alert Page. The aforementioned photo and video stream is also made available on a secure webpage. Finally, it informs the user's ERC that he \ she is safe as soon as it's confirmed by the user.

The company claims to have put in 2 years of research and development and has invested over a million dollars in this app. The free app hopes to increase survivability in situations involving assaults on women, ragging in college, medical emergencies, road accidents, and personal security threats among other scenarios. It can also be of great use in emergency situations such as terrorist attacks or natural calamities. In these uncertain times, apps such as these are definitely a boon.
