Yahoo! Sticks To 8th January Deadline For More Secure Mails

Claims it has not shared any data with NSA explicitly.

That NSA and Prism used to snoop around user emails on various service providers, including Yahoo! and Gmail is old news. However, starting June this year, Google is said to have taken steps to encrypt emails on its servers, as reported by The Washington Post. Now, Yahoo! after a series of glitches seems to be back on track to win back its lost loyalists. As users are still trying to figure out where all their confidential emails really ended up, Marrisa Meyer has assured its users that Yahoo! is finally taking corrective steps. On its official Tumblr site, she says that emails will soon be protected by a more secure https (SSL - Secure Sockets Layer) encryption with a 2048-bit key which is expected to be in place by 8th January, 2014 as it had promised earlier this year.

The site further states: "Today we are announcing that we will extend that effort across all Yahoo products. More specifically this means we will:

  • Encrypt all information that moves between our data centres by the end of Q1 2014;
  • Offer users an option to encrypt all data flow to/from Yahoo by the end of Q1 2014;
  • Work closely with our international Mail partners to ensure that Yahoo co-branded Mail accounts are https-enabled."
