Microsoft Shows Off An Improved Kinect Without Sacrificing Performance

The new Kinect incorporates an HD camera, wider field of view, and 6 million pixels per second without affecting performance.

 

Nintendo may have ushered the revolution of motion-controlled videogames, but it is Microsoft that truly let the concept run free, by taking the controller bit out of the motion-controller business. The Kinect may have been the most intuitive of the lot, but hardware limitations of the Xbox 360 meant that processing all that visual data into meaningful control input wasn't an easy task. Hard-core gamers weren't exactly happy with Kinect's lag and latency, which meant it was restricted to not-so-mainstream games. In fact, when it came to actual controllability in shooter implementations, Sony's PlayStation Move was decidedly better, considering its lag-free and precise nature.

All that might change with the new-and-improved Kinect, on the upcoming Xbox One console. Microsoft has released a video showcasing these improvements, and how they went about the business of eking most out of the new console and motion controller's hardware. For starters the new Kinect has a wider field-of-view, which should automatically reduce the debilitating living room size restrictions.

However, that and a better HD camera also means more information for the console to process. By that I mean the 6.5 million pixels per second. According to Microsoft, though, that doesn't quite affect the the Xbox One's performance. How? Just check out the video to find out.
