Sci-fi Digital Tattoos Are Here

My Tattoo is Better Than Yours.

Well here's another crazy trend that will soon catch up, “Digital Tatoos”. An artist demonstrates how to get a tattoo and make it viewable on a smartphone. A while back, Nokia also applied for a patent for tatoos that inform of incoming calls.

Unlike traditional tattoos that you can show off, digital tattoos require a digital medium to be seen. Using NFC / RFID chip inserted under the skin, Artist Anthony Antonellis shows off his 'rudimentary' work of an animated GIF having 10 frames, 6 colours, and under 1 kilobyte.

Modestly, Anthony says, “Only the stitches hurt, because I looked at them", while trying not to itch the incision between the thumb and index finger. The chip itself is preserved by a glass capsule storing 1 KB of data which is readable by compatible phones, tablets, or card readers.

Currently 'Read Only', the data on the chip can be replaced with GIFs, JPGs, Midi files, favicons, ASCII art and the like. NFC / RFID data is usually encrypted but in this case it is publicly accessible. For more details check out animalnewyork.com

Once this becomes main stream, you can expect "My Digital Tattoo's better than yours" wars, even greater sizes exceeding that of a USB drive, a whole new level of cheating in exams and a lot of frustrated flyers explaining in vain to dumbfounded security personnel at the airports.

What would you do with a Digital Tattoo?
