Twitter Crashes On New Year's Eve

Servers overload with over 16,000 tweets per second.

Micro-blogging website Twitter faced a meltdown on New Year's Eve as enthusiastic tweeters kept posting at an accelerated rate. At about 3 pm GMT (coinciding with the New Year in Japan) on the New Year's Eve, the speed reached a record 16,197 tweets per second that sent the servers crashing.

Users eager to post messages were thereafter greeted with the familiar "Twitter is over capacity" message. The site eventually started working again but kept stopping randomly while celebrations continued around the world.
