Chinese Form Fellowship Of The Patents

Cellphone makers join forces to resist patent trolling from Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, et al.

According to a recent report, China has overtaken U.S. as the world's largest smartphone market. Needless to say, this has piqued the interest of the larger fish such as Apple, Nokia, and Microsoft, who now want a slice of the Oriental smartphone pie.

Chinese handset makers, well known for their "inspired designs", haven't been victims of patent trolling until now. They have slipped under the radar because they have been catering to niche markets and low-budget segment. However, all that is about to change. International smartphone players have trained their sights on the Chinese market. Apparently, they are softening the local players by bombarding them with patent lawsuits before moving in for a full-scale invasion.

Microsoft has been trying to bully Huawei into a patent licensing deal, while Nokia has been busy trolling several Chinese smartphone makers. The Reds have responded by forming an alliance comprising of players such as Coolpad, Konka, TCL, ZTE, and Lenovo. The western invaders should expect heavy resistance, as the home team is armed to the teeth with its own share of patents. Huawei alone packs 65,000 of them worldwide. It looks like a big patent war is headed China's way. That's good news if you happen to be a Chinese lawyer.
