Aadhaar-Like Verification For SIM Cards Soon

With the biometric system in place, pre-activated SIM cards can be phased out completely from the country.

Similar to the Aadhaar cards in India, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is contemplating making Biometric verification mandatory for purchase of SIM cards throughout the country. This according to the ministry will curb the misuse of SIM cards for anti-social activities.

An Economic Times report states that cellular service providers will be required to scan customers' fingerprints, which will in turn be sent to a central database of fingerprints. The database is expected to be linked to the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) keeping in mind national security.

Biometric SIM cards will definitely lead to a more secure identification process. In fact the DoT had made it compulsory for SIM card retailers to physically verify a particular SIM-card applicant before enabling activation of his/her SIM card. But with some retailers resorting to selling pre-activated SIM cards, verification doesn't happen as vigorously. For now, selling of pre-activated SIM cards is illegal, and attracts a fine of Rs 50,000, along with termination of mobile connection to that particular SIM card.
