Telegraph Service To Be Phased Out In India

BSNL will pull the plug on the dated service on 15th July.

 

BSNL is all set to shut down the age-old telegraph service on 15th July 2013, reports The Hindu. The 160 year old service had been popularised by the Hindi cinemas, right up till the 90s after which the telephone and mobile phone era took over. Not just that, but it was perhaps the only communication medium with a sense of speed and urgency in the age of snail-mail then. In a circular issued by the senior General Manager (Telegraph Services) Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) Shameem Akhtar, the telegraph service (better known as TAAR) will see its last on the date mentioned before.

No one I know uses the service any longer, so it's difficult to understand how it managed to survive as long as it did. Probably it did because people forgot it even existed! For the curious kitties, a telegram costs you Rs 28, whereas you can send SMS for practically no cost. And if your relatives work at the Telegraph office (and no, I don't mean the newspaper/website) fret not, as the existing staff will be moved to the mobile, landline, or broadband departments.

Looking back at telegraph for one last time, one has to say that back in the days, the telegram was the only messaging service that came close to instant messaging. Or as @krazyfrog likes to put it, Telegrams were the original push notifications. We agree.
