Amazon Appstore Enhanced To v5.0, Reaches India

Can lead to more new Kindle devices being bought in the subcontinent.

Those who were stuck without legit app support on their Kindle Fire tablets in India can cheer up from now on, as Amazon has enhanced its App repository (Appstore v5.0 for Android), and extended the same to 195 countries including the Indian subcontinent. This news was expected for a while now, and with the Appstore finally hitting India, users can download the APK and install it on their Android devices which enables users to play around with apps, from Amazon's US store with their India account credentials.

With the latest expansion, Amazon becomes the numero-uno in terms of number of countries to which its apps (both freewares and paid) can go to. Amazon is followed by Windows Phone Store (180 countries), and Apple's iTunes (155 countries). Google Play (134 countries) trails behind Apple iTunes. With Amazon's Appstore 5.0 now in our country, we can expect the newer Kindle devices to reach Indian shores as well.

Amazon has invited developers to develop apps and even sell them to the company. Developers can check out Amazon's developers section, and can access the Mobile App SDK (software development kit) without having to use a developer account. The SDK includes best practices, reference materials and Amazon APIs that developers can take assistance from, while creating apps.

As for the official changelog in Amazon's Appstore v5.0 for Android:

  • Support for 195 countries including Australia, India, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa.
  • Performance and stability enhancements.
  • Support for users of various European Union Countries such as Switzerland, Ireland, Austria and Belgium.
  • Canada users offered international support.

Note that Google's Play Store is already engaged in a fierce battle with Apple's iOS repository, so the entry of Amazon may bring them gains on the hardware side as well.
