Samsung To Provide Commercialised 5G By 2020

5G would allow users to download digital movies hundreds of times faster than the data speeds of existing 4G networks.

In a scenario where 4G networks are only beginning to find footing in most countries, Samsung has announced that it has developed an adaptive array transceiver technology to operate in the millimeter-wave Ka bands, to enable cellular communication, and according to the company, this technology is at the core of the 5G wireless communications system. Samsung says that this system will ensure data transmission that would be several hundred times faster than 4G wireless communication.

Samsung also claims to make the 5G technology, that it has developed commercial by 2020. However, considering the Indian scenario we think that Samsung would face further delays, as 4G itself is still in the nascent stages in the subcontinent. In fact 4G doesn't even operate across all Indian states. Bharti Airtel provides 4G LTE in metropolitan cities such as Kolkata and Bangalore, apart from Tier-II cities such as Pune, Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. Government backed cellular service provider BSNL has 4G in Kochi, with a likely roll out in other cities soon. The bright side of this may be that India could leapfrog its way directly to 5G.

Samsung's current 5G technology, the array transceiver technology, is said to have the capability to transmit data at 28 GHz frequency, and clock up to speeds of 1.056 Gbps in a 2 KM distance radius. These numbers indicate that once commercialized, users would be able to download digital movies in a reduced time frame (in comparison to the download time over 4G networks). It would be interesting to consider this download speed viability in India where inappropriate content accessing by the elite class is a becoming a matter of serious concern.

However, on the other side, Samsung's 5G by 2020 would lead to the simplification of the entire download process, and enable efficient communication. In fact China and the European Union have already begun groundwork on looking at commercializing 5G by 2020. 5G could also create a revolution (as it is wireless) in developing countries, with little wired connectivity.
