Microsoft Revamps YouTube App For Windows Phone 8

The app allows YouTube videos to be pinned on Windows Phone 8's Live Tiles.

Microsoft had announced that it would be updating its YouTube app for Windows 8, to sync better with the features Windows Phone 8 offers. Having been rolled out, the updated app is available for download from the Windows Store. YouTube for Windows Phone 8 is now a true app, in contrast to its previous avatar of essentially just linking to the YouTube service.

Microsoft's YouTube app now allows users to access videos, playlists and channels - users can also pin these to Live Tiles for faster access. With this, users can switch between the latest video from their subscriptions and the most popular videos. This is a welcome change for Windows Phone 8 users, as users earlier needed to get the job done by depending on third-party applications. Apart from these, Microsoft has also introduced newer enhancements such as a new Playlist design which makes it easier to access video content. Videos can now be played in the background (audio content of these videos) even when users lock their smartphone screen.

Sharing videos onto popular social networks is supported in the new YouTube Windows Phone 8 app. Microsoft has also added a Kid's corner with which the company says that parents can monitor the videos that their children access. Kid's corner is a program that needs to be setup on Windows Phone 8 phones, by following the procedures mentioned in its official page. After setting up this, YouTube can also be pinned to Kid's corner.

The YouTube experience may well get better for WP8 users with this update, but Microsoft hasn't yet released a corresponding app for users of Windows Phone 7.x who are bound to fret. The company though, says users can expect updates for Windows Phone 7.5 soon.
