Coming Soon: Low-Cost Android Laptops With Intel Inside

Touchscreen convertibles could debut in the next few months for as low as $200 (approx Rs 11,000).

Intel-powered touchscreen laptops running Android could soon come out this year, with price tags as low as $200 (approx Rs 11,000). This is more than just a rumour, because it comes straight from Intel CEO Paul Otellini and Intel Executive VP Dadi Perlmutter, according to a CNET report. While it was not known what OS these low-cost laptops would run, it is now clear that Android, rather than Windows 8, would be their flavour. Moreover, these notebooks will also feature touchscreens.

Powered by Atom processors, Perlmutter also stated that these devices will sport convertible form factor, meaning that they can transform into a tablet from a laptop when required. At present, convertible devices come at a much higher price-point. He further mentioned that the price of laptops with Core line CPUs will fall between the $399 (Rs 22,000) and $499 (Rs 27,000) range.

Bringing convertibles to such a low-cost segment with the backing of a well-known player like Intel, could worry the Qualcomm camp, which is currently dominating in this segment. Of course, the above mentioned price is US specific, and you'll have to consider taxes and customs duty that would be applicable when they come to India.
