Microsoft To Roll Out Two-Step Account Verification Soon

Google, Apple and Facebook already offer optional two-step verification of user accounts.

Microsoft will roll out an optional two-step verification mechanism for users to access Microsoft accounts (formerly Microsoft Live IDs). Microsoft cites "security threats" for resorting to "two-step verification" mechanism. About 700 million users around the world are said to use the company's various services. The two step verification will only take effect when users enable it by following: https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage, on their respective MS accounts.

Once users enable it, additional information would need to be entered, apart from the username and password. Additional information includes the code and password that Microsoft sends to users' phones, or to their alternate email id. Users of Windows Phone have an authenticator app which Microsoft has released, through which they can receive the verification code offline as well.

However, accessing services from devices you use frequently, wouldn't require the two step verification code. Users not using a particular device for log in would again be prompted to enter the code, during their next log in. The verification process is a pain, but two step verification ensures "enhanced cloud security" which is one of its major advantages.

As of now, Microsoft is yet to roll out the verification process. Google already offers two-step verification for "increased security".
