Mojostreet Launches With 18,000 Downloads

Indians get a taste of location-based gaming and social networking.

As location-based social networking and gaming services gather steam, India has witnessed the official launch of Mojostreet - advertised as "a real word game, friend finder, city guide, social network and loyalty rewards all rolled into one app for your smartphone". This 700 KB smartphone app is available for Android, Nokia, iOS, and BlackBerry  devices, and aims to be the Swiss army knife of location-based services. Combining the virtues of similar offerings such as Foursquare (social network), SCVNGR (game), and Google Places (city guide), the free-to-download application gives users a smorgasboard of activities and rewards.

The gaming component involves checking into places to "own" them, which can then be leveraged to charge other participants rent in the game's virtual currency. Think of it as a glorified version of Monopoly superimposed onto the real world. The app sees participation from real-world merchants and establishments, who offer player rewards for "checking in". It's this aspect that makes the service similar to Google Places, where you can check into an establishment and recommend it to your friends. At the moment, Mojostreet claims to have 5.5 million geo-tagged locations, harbouring check-in rewards from 150 brands across 1250 locations.

"In collaboration with mojostreet, businesses can run special rewards that are won by users who check in to their locations. For example, a food corner could create a special that gives free deserts [sic, we'll take the Sahara] to customers who visiting [sic] them for the second time. These specials encourage repeat visits, first-time visits and higher spending by customers", claims Founder and CEO, Kalyan Manyam, encapsulating the essence of Mojostreet, albeit with a good helping of grammar gaffes.

The service boasts of 18,000 downloads and check-ins across 422 cities around the world in two weeks of its beta launch. If you want a slice of this location-based pie, head over to this link to know more.
