Vodafone Now On DoT Radar, Sharing Airtel's Grief

Vodafone needs to bid for auction of spectrum freshly in 3 telecom circles, else risk the possibility of its licence being cancelled by DOT.

Vodafone along with other telcos needs to participate in a fresh round of spectrum auctions to continue providing services to subscribers, or risk a DoT order to suspend services.

A report says that a similar diktat would also be sent to Airtel, which recently came under the DOT scanner for providing 3G services via tie-ups with other telcos in circles where the company does not possess 3G spectrum. Bharti Airtel managed to get a stay from the Delhi Court against the DOT order.

Vodafone, Airtel and Loop Telecom approached the court to contend the DOT directive of fresh spectrum auction, saying they have sought extension of their licences to provide services to subscribers; while using the spectrum that they possess.

According to the Economic Times report, the spectrum range that telcos hold, which DOT has identified for auction is: 8 MHz of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone in Delhi, 6.2 MHz of Airtel and 7.8 MHz of Vodafone in Kolkata, and 8 MHz spectrum held by Loop Mobile and Vodafone in Mumbai telecom circle.

Fear looms throughout the country, that services offered by Indian telecom operators are subject to the Government's whims, and can be suspended on flimsy pretexts (with the exception of BSNL which is govt-owned).
