Patent Application Shows Apple iWatch In The Making

Wearable display may be the future and Apple isn't leaving a stone unturned to claim it.

With good timing, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has published a patent application filed back in August 2011 by Apple. This patent application reveals the concept of iWatch, about which rumours have been buzzing around the web for a long time now.

The claims and description in the application give us an idea of what Apple might do with it's iWatch. The summary of the whole application has been dug up by PatentlyApple which describes it as a flexible display coupled with a "slap wrap". The device will be featuring a touch sensitive display along with wireless communication antenna, power & data connectors and a battery. The touchscreen is expected to give users control over various useful operations like reading text messages, handling playlists and viewing maps among other features. There is a Kinetic Energy gathering device fitted to the module, probably to generate some of the energy required to charge the device on the go.

While all of these technologies sound interesting, let us remind you that this is just a patent application and Apple would like to have as much control on the future of technologies either just to be the forerunner or to sue someone who tries to outrun them. Wearable technology is just the Next Big Thing and Apple might just be collecting as much as possible to get onto the Monopoly board.

We can be certain that some of the features mentioned in the application may be a part of some forthcoming Apple product, but do not expect the exact entity to be on the shelf someday. There is an importance of patents but now-a-days they are used more in the courtrooms, than in the R&D lab. You can read the complete claims and description of the patent here.
