SanDisk Launches Ultra Plus SSDs In India At Starting Price Of Rs 10,600

High performance drives promise high reliability and power efficiency.

Storage manufacturer SanDisk has launched its Ultra Plus series of SSDs in India. The company had shown off this series at the CES last month. Sporting SATA 3.0 (6.0 Gbps) interface, these drives come in 2.5" form factor, making them ideal to be used in laptops as well as desktop PCs (with mounting bracket adapters). The company claims that these SSDs are ideal to boost the boot, shutdown, data transfer, and application launch times on laptops as well as desktop computers. SanDisk claims that the SSDs can achieve a sequential read speed of 530 MB/s and sequential write speed of 445 MB/s, which is the reason for the speedier performance.

Since an SSD has no moving parts, it is more durable and can withstand bumps. This is unlike a traditional hard drive with a spinning platter with a read/write head almost touching it, thus making it much more susceptible to shock damage. The lack of moving mechanical parts also results in a lower power consumption. The SSD is available in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB, at MRPs of Rs 10,600, Rs 15,500, and Rs 31,000 respectively.

SSDs have been around for quite some time now and it is high time they became affordable for the average user. Yet, the prices continue to remain high, probably because manufacturers still want to make more money while they can. A traditional hard drive is a lot cheaper and is more capacious (a 500 GB HDD costs Rs 3300), and is still therefore still preferred by the general consumer. SSDs generally end up with enthusiasts, gamers, and overclockers who want to push their system performance to the limits.
