Twitter Hacked, Affected Accounts To Be Active After Resetting Passwords

A blog post by Twitter said that about 250,000 accounts may be compromised, and affected users are intimated via email to reset passwords.

In the latest security breach involving big name Internet companies, a small percentage of Twitter accounts were compromised giving hackers access to user data.  To put the scale of the breach in perspective, 250,000 out of estimated 500 million accounts is less than  0.05%, but the fact that a security breach occurred is cause for concern and it raises questions (again) on online security. If Twitter can be hacked, what about other (less known) services that all of us use?

Twitter explained the incident and the measures it was taking in response to the incident in a blog post. The home page of Twitter is business as usual. In the blog though, Twitter has provided a fairly informative explanation, including links to articles that talk about best practices for password management. About the incident itself, Twitter said "This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident. The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked." Affected accounts will need a password reset from the respective users, and Twitter has emailed those users with instructions to reset their password in order to continue using the service. Old passwords would not work for those accounts.
