Rumour: Curved Onscreen Keypad In Development For Windows Phone 8

Arced keypad is designed to let large-screened smartphone users text with one hand.

Texting with one hand on a QWERTY keyboard can be cumbersome for some smartphone users, especially newbies or those with thick fingers. Help is around the corner though, as WMPoweruser.com has reported that Microsoft, along with some of its partners, is working on an arc-style keyboard layout that will allow typing using only the thumb.

The leaked image from a Microsoft Research presentation slide shows the interface on the HTC 7 Trophy, with keys having three to four letters placed on a curve within the reach of a user's thumb. While this demonstrates right-handed operation, there is likely to be a setting to make this left-handed as well. If this turns out to be true, you will have to turn predictive text on, but typing may become a lot easier.

This is certainly a nifty innovation from Microsoft, and I would like to see this feature coming to Windows Phone 8. Hopefully, it will also be available in WP7.8 as well. That would make a lot of current WP smartphone users happy, as they've been grumbling about how MS has left them out in the cold.
