Shop While You Stream - YouTube's New Features

The company has partnered with Shopify to allow users to purchase while watching content on the digital streaming platform

YouTube has launched several new shopping features for viewers and creators on its platform, having first spoken about it for close to a couple of years now. The company also announced a partnership with Shopify that allows creators and merchants to feature products on channels, which can then be purchased directly by consumers.

The first big change is that eligible creators on YouTube can now link shopify stores to their channel, thereby displaying products across it and leveraging Shopify's real-time inventory syncing feature. The feature, currently available in the United States, also enables onsite checkout whereby viewers can complete their purchase without leaving YouTube.

In addition, the company also announced a new shopping destination called Explore, which would be available in India and Brazil besides the US markets. Explore will feature relevant shoppable content for viewers, which means that eCommerce companies can now offer their wares directly on the streaming platform.

Given that YouTube is offering all eligible content creators access to the live shopping features, it becomes an easy way to promote products using a tagging mechanism linked directly to a livestream from the Live Control Room. A creator live streaming a new fashion accessory could be wearing it and offering ready discounts to those watching the show.

The company also introduced a new set of tools on YouTube Studio's Shopping tab to help creators easily manage their products through tagging so that it appears across their channel. YouTube says it made the shift given the effort put in by creators to develop their products which should then be easier to manage on the stores on YouTube for customers to find.

YouTube's shift from a streaming platform to a shopping destination has been in the works for close to two years now though the company teased some of these features a few weeks back only. These included the ability for two creators to go live simultaneously for co-hosting a single live shopping stream.
