Google's Sundar Pichai of Google & Satya Nadella of Microsoft honoured with Padma Bhushan

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in India and both Pichai and Nadella will be honored with this award for their contributions in “Trade and Industry”

 

On India's 73rd Republic Day, both Alphabet and Microsoft CEOs, Sundar Pichai & Satya Nadella, were given the prestigious Padma Bhushan. Both Indian origin CEOs are among the most prominent names in the tech industry.

Nadella and Pichai were counted amongst those receiving the award after the Indian government announced the full list of awardees. 

Both tech magnates are among 17 Padma Bhushan winners this year, which also include Bharat Biotech’s Krishna Ella and Serum Institute chairman Cyrus Poonawala.

Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in India, after the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri are the three categories in which the Padma Awards are conferred. 

The Padma honours are given for exceptional service in various fields like social work, art, public affairs, engineering and science, industry and trade, medicine, education and literature, civil service, and sports. 

India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, Late General Bipin Rawat, was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. 107 personalities including singer Sonu Nigam and Olympic gold-medallist Neeraj Chopra, will receive the Padma Shri. 

The total number of Padma awardees is 128.
