Instagram to bring back ‘Chronological Feed’ in 2022

Users will have the option to view their feed in chronological order instead of being manipulated by algorithms.

“We believe in more transparency and accountability and we believe in more control. That’s why we’re currently working on a version of a chronological feed that we hope to launch next year,” said Instagram Head Adam Mosseri during a Senate subcommittee hearing in the US.

The Senate hearing was about how Instagram damages the mental health of young people, specifically teenagers.

Mosseri was asked if he believed consumers should be able to use Instagram without “being manipulated by algorithms,” and he replied that he would gladly give users the option to view their feed in chronological order. He also said that Instagram was currently developing that chronological option.

Instagram’s switch to an algorithmic feed in 2016 was fraught with controversy, because before the switch, users were able to view their feed chronologically.

Back then filtered feeds were becoming the norm across the social media landscape, because they improved engagement metrics. But many users were unhappy with algorithms determining their feed.
