Zynga wants to make a comeback with Farmville 3
India is not only building games but is also creating vibrant global gaming communities.

Kishore Kichili, who heads Zynga India, disclosed that the Bengaluru studio of the company has played a key role in developing FarmVille 3, which is available to play on iOS, Android and desktop M1 Mac. In this game you can grow row virtual gardens, raise virtual farm animals, and even become virtual farmers.
10 years ago, mobile-game developer Zynga set the foundation for a new type of ‘social gaming’ with its hit FarmVille, a farming-simulation game that was wildly popular at one point on Facebook. That first iteration is barely played anymore but Zynga hopes the third version of the game will be as popular as the first.
“A large-size team has contributed towards the development of FarmVille 3 and the same is the case with CSR Racing 2.” Kishore Kichili said, adding that India is “not only building games but also contributing to the global games”.
Kichili says India is not only an important market for the consumption of mobile games but also key to the development of the company’s recent games available on smartphones and social platforms.
Zynga shot to fame with FarmVille’s debut in 2009, when it was available on Facebook. Millions of players played it. The mobile version of Farmville was introduced a year later when Steve Jobs invited then Zynga CEO Mark Pincus to list FarmVille on the App Store along with the launch of the iPhone 4. Although the original FarmVille was shut down in 2020 when Adobe ended Flash Player support for web browsers, Zynga still has a cult following with 700 million installs to date.
FarmVille was a successful attempt at creating a market for social games and both Zynga and Facebook have benefitted. Millions got Facebook in the early 2010s simply to play Farmville, and at that time 19% of Facebook’s revenue in 2011 came from people playing Farmville. But then the popularity began to fade and Facebook users started complaining about being ‘poked’ by Farmville players and getting unwanted Farmville notifications.
Farmville opened the gate to advertising while playing games, in-app purchases to enhance the gaming experience, while also letting casual gamers enjoy the game at a basic level for free.
