Rumour: Nokia Has Shelved Its Meltemi OS

Linux-based OS was touted as an alternative to Nokia's Series 40 platform.

 

Briefly in the past, we’ve seen reports emerge of Nokia’s new Linux-based operating system for entry level smartphones, known as the Meltemi OS. Now, All Things D is reporting that Nokia has scrapped the project that was supposed to further develop the Series 40 operating system, which is doing pretty well on its own.

Nothing was clear about Meltemi right from the beginning, with Nokia neither providing clarity about its existence, nor denying it. It seems that the OS was a prototype, which was never revealed to the world. Maybe the challenges involved in developing a new OS, and getting developers to work on it, seemed a bit farfetched to Nokia. With the recent announcement of three new Series 40 Asha handsets, it is clear that Nokia isn't just working on Windows Phones, though that still remains its primary focus.

The CEO of Nokia, Stephen Elop at a recent conference call didn't comment on the OS, but mentioned that Nokia has put the brakes on "some developmental projects". This also comes amidst reports of Nokia letting go off 10,000 of its workers. Nokia's other Linux-based operating system, MeeGo, saw the same fate, as the company stopped development of the OS to focus on Windows Phone 7 at the time. The company apparently wants to bring low-cost Windows Phones to the market, to attract more buyers and is believed to be working on it closely with Microsoft.
