Upcoming iPhone May Draw Inspiration From Chinese Phones

The latest patent filing from Apple hints at reflective colour-shifting surface.

For years, Apple has been largely regarded as a design driven company. It leads innovations in the manufacturing process, which are then followed by most smartphone brands. However, going by the Cupertino company's latest patent filing, things seem to be going in the reverse direction. The specific patent hints that the next iPhone may feature micro-texture finish, which already exists on a few smartphones from Oppo, Huawei, and OnePlus.

The filing of the patent comes just in time when consumers are reacting positively to reflective or gradient hue phones. These devices even shift colours based on light reflection. And Apple's patent filing titled 'Surface Finishing' revolves around similar ideas.

The most peculiar aspect of the patent filing is where it deals with various sandblasting techniques to achieve light play on the device's surface. It also touches upon the use of ceramic beads in sandblasting technique. In short, these processes are meant to get a controlled colour shift on the back panel.

So, if company's industrial designer, Jony Ive greenlights this, your next iPhone may turn out to be more interesting like its Chinese competitors.
