AIIMS Considers Using Facebook To Promote Organ Donation

Plans on using social network's reach to create awareness and encourage donors to come forth.

After Facebook let people declare themselves as organ donors for its US-based users, AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) is pondering upon extending services to Indian users as well. The country's premier medical institute's Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation has plans to take aid from FB to encourage voluntary organ donations and create awareness about it, according to Dr Arti Vij, chief of Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation at AIIMS.

Currently the organisation maintains detailed lists of terminally ill patients in need of organ donors, matching recipients, procurement procedures of organ transplantation, awareness programs, and promotion of organ donation and transplantation activities among other details.

Dr Vij further adds, "We are still weighing the pros and cons of it. Facebook is a good platform to spread the message of voluntary organ donation to the masses. Once we have assessed everything, we will decide the day".

People can donate as a many as 11 organs such as heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, eyes, heart valve, and skin. If the service is set up, would you be game for organ donation? Do let us know through the comments section below.
