Xiaomi Unveils Mi 5c Smartphone With Home-Brewed Chipset

The 4G VoLTE handset is expected to hit the stores in China next week.

Xiaomi isn't participating in the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017. However, that hasn't stopped the Chinese company from unveiling a new phone. Dubbed the Mi 5c, the phone comes with a metal body and iPhone-esque curves.

The Mi 5c features a 5.1-inch Full HD screen. It has slight curved, which the industry refers to as 2.5D glass. Xiaomi claims that the display has 550 nits brightness. The Mi 5c is the first handset to be powered by Xiaomi's Surge S1 chipset. It seems Xiaomi wants to reduce its dependency on chip-makers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

In the photography department, you get a 12-megapixel rear camera. For selfies, there's an 8-megapixel snapper as well. The dual-SIM handset is compatible with 4G VoLTE, which means you can use it on Reliance Jio network.

The phone has 3 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage. In the connectivity department, it has got the essentials covered such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, and A-GPS. Then, you get a fingerprint sensor and IR blaster. The latter can be used as a universal remote. The phone is backed by a 2860 mAh battery with fast charging tech baked in. The Xiaomi Mi 5c will hit the stores in China on 3rd of March. Available in Rose Gold, Gold, and Black, the handset is expected to retail for 1499 yuan.
