Uber Introduces Beacons To Stop You From Entering The Wrong Cab

Riders can select the colour on the cab's Beacon for easy identification.

If you use Uber, you must have entered the wrong car at least once. I know, the ride-hailing service provides you with details such as the car model and registration number. However, that does not stop a person like me who is incredibly bad with numbers from getting confused. Thankfully, Uber seems to understand this and has come up with a neat solution called Beacon.

Beacon is Philips hue esque device that goes on a driver's windshield. Using the app, riders can select the colour on the cab's Beacon. This way, you can instantly recognise your ride even on a crowded street. Before opening up for public, Uber tested the concept in Seattle. According to the findings, the pilot reduced calls between Uber riders and drivers.

The Beacon is easy to setup and works without wires. It comes with an in-built battery that can last for several evenings without charge. Starting tomorrow, Uber Beacon will be introduced in select cities including Miami, Denver, Nashville, and Newcastle (UK). Uber is planning to distribute the Beacon devices to drivers at community events. As of this writing, the company hasn't mentioned whether it will be bringing this technology to India.
