Facebook Introduces Express Wifi Programme In India

The social networking giant promises cheaper ways to access the Internet.

 

Facebook Basics was banned in India due to net neutrality concerns. However, it seems that move hasn't deterred the social networking giant from delivering cheaper ways to access the Internet in India. Zuckerberg's company has now unveiled Facebook Express for India, an initiative that will spread the Wi-Fi access to different parts of the nation.



On the programme's official page, Facebook states that reliable Internet connection is essential for people to access news, education, health, job postings, entertainment, and communication tools. The company further states that, "Express Wifi empowers local entrepreneurs to help provide quality internet access to their neighbors and make a steady income. Working with local internet service providers or mobile operators, they’re able to use software provided by Facebook to connect their communities."

However, at this point, Facebook hasn't shared any information regarding the service providers it is tying up with and pricing. One thing is for sure that unlike Facebook Basics, the Express programme won't be free. More importantly, the access won't be limited to a certain Facebook affiliated websites. As anyone would have guessed by now, the Facebook Express will require support from the locals and service providers.
