Sharp President Confirms OLED Screen On The Next iPhone

Apple will finally catch-up with the competition in the screen department.

Japanese brand Sharp is the major screen panel provider to Apple. Yes, those LCD screens on your iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are made by Sharp. What's interesting is that the company's senior executive confirmed that the next generation iPhone line-up will choose OLED over the existing LCD panels.

As reported by Nikkei.com, the Sharp President Tai Jeng-wu spilled the beans at the Tatung University ceremony, in which he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree. It is said that the American tech-giant is revamping the design of its flagship product in time for the 10th anniversary next year. Tai Jeng-wu added that "We don't know whether Apple's OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesn't walk down this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It is a crisis but it is also an opportunity,".

By crisis, we are sure he was hinting at Apple's first annual sales decline since 2001. Currently, Sharp has limited OLED production capabilities. So to meet the demands, the Japanese company is already building a new OLED panel manufacturing facility.

OLED panels are known for its rich colours and deeper blacks compared to the LCD screens. It is also possible to create curved OLED panels on a large scale. Brands such as Samsung and Motorola have been using OLED in its high-end devices for years. It will be great to see Apple finally catch-up with the other brands in the screen department.
