Amazon Launches A Snoopy Little Echo Dot (2nd Gen)

The "smart" voice assistant listens to your conversations all the time.

A couple of years back, Amazon launched a "smart" gadget that works as a central home automation hub. Much like Siri, this cylindrical speaker called "Echo" can provide weather updates, play music, order pizza, and whatnot. While doing that, it also listens to your family's conversation all the time. Isn't it reminiscent of HAL 9000 from Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey?

Echo was followed by a smaller and relatively affordable Echo Dot. It can be added to the existing Echo system for wider coverage. The Echo Dot works a standalone device too. For 2016, Jeff Bezos' company has unveiled a second generation Echo Dot. Priced under $50, the all new Echo Dot is leaner than its predecessor. Amazon's "smart" product is equipped a 3.5 mm jack so that it can play nice with your existing music system. Apart from controlling light switches and thermostats, the second generation Eco Dot can also order a pizza or Uber for you. Powered by Alexa, the Echo Dot is capable of learning new things. It can adapts to your speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preferences. So far, it has over 3000 skills. According to Amazon, thousands of third party developers are also building new skills for Alexa.

The all-new Echo Dot is available in white and black. It is up for pre-order starting today and the shipping will commence next month. The Eco Dot can be yours for $50. Those who order five units will get one Eco Dot for free.
