WhatsApp To Cease Support For Symbian From December 31

BlackBerry, Android 2.1 Éclair, and Android 2.2 Froyo are among the other platforms that have also received the axe.

Yesterday, I met someone who mentioned the term ‘technological evolution’. Those two words seem to be the mantra of survival in the 21st century, aka the Digital Age.

It seems WhatsApp Messenger agrees. Earlier this year, the social media giant announced that by the end of 2016, they would be cutting support for a list of mobile operating systems. This list includes:

  • Nokia Symbian S60

  • Nokia S40

  • BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10

  • Android 2.1 and Android 2.2

  • Windows Phone 7.1

  • iPhone 3GS/iOS 6

Notifications regarding stoppage of WhatsApp support for the platform has started popping up on Symbian phones all over the world.

The message reads, "Unfortunately, you won't be able to use WhatsApp after 31/12/2016 because WhatsApp will no longer support your phone." In their blog post, WhatsApp recommended that users of any of the affected platforms switch to iOS, Android, or Windows Phone in order to continue using WhatsApp.

In their words, these platforms ‘don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future.’ This decision marks just how much the market has changed in the years since WhatsApp was first launched in 2009. At that time, Android and iOS platforms were running on less than 25 percent of active devices, while BlackBerry and Nokia's operating systems dominated the market with roughly a 70 percent share. WhatsApp's decision to pull the plug on Symbian and BlackBerry, however recaps, how these platforms have lost popularity.

BlackBerry has said that they are ‘extremely disappointed’ with WhatsApp’s decision, and are currently searching for alternatives for BlackBerry users.
