Instagram Adds Comment Moderation Option To Tackle Trolls

Under fire from users, now the social platform allows business profiles to block off offensive comments

This is something all celebrities would love! The ability to shut the trolls up without having to ask them to #STFU makes life easier for both the stars as well as business owners who use Instagram as a medium of communication with their followers (target audience).

The new feature would allow users having a business page to access a “Moderate Comments” section under the settings tab, a report published in TechCrunch says (Read the full report here). Once enabled, the new feature blocks comments that contain profanities based on what has been reported as offensive.

In the past, users have complained consistently about the spams and profanities being added to the comments section because of the perceived anonymity resulting from the fact that probably no one reads them all. This generates bad online behavior, which is what the new fix is trying fix.

Of late, several users have preferred Snapchat because the platform does not allow random users to comment on the images. Brands and advertisers definitely find the pollutants to be irritating and could find some solace with the Comment Moderation update.

However, the article on TechCrunch believes that the update, though welcome, is “a bit of a blunt tool compared to the precise moderation options available in third-party social media management suites.”

Instagram had launched the Business Page only last month as a free add-on for accounts that want to be recognized as a business. In addition to a ‘contact’ button that allows users to add a call-to-action, the service also provides analytics so that users can view statistics of their accounts from within the app.
