Even the most successful companies in technology might find it tough to pin point what worked for them. Recently, Sony were only being frank than stupid while saying that they were clueless about the secret behind the success of PlayStation 4 gaming console.

For a few this might come in as a shock because Sony could have claimed anything as their USP after selling 10 million units of its PS 4.

Most of the companies, including mobile manufacturers, would not be candid enough to admit this; it is a fact that they always try to put their best efforts into a product and then keep their fingers crossed on how it would be received in the market.

As Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida accepts this, he says this could have serious implications on future strategy because they don’t know why people are buying them.

This has been mainly due to constantly changing dynamics in technology. What looks like a brilliant innovation today might become obsolete tomorrow. The world of tech is moving so fast that a product is in danger of becoming outdated within a couple of months.

Along with the quality of one’s product, it is rivals who also contribute to their success. This seems to be the case with PS 4.

In a market of gaming consoles Sony's rivals are few, Microsoft’s Xbox One seems to be main challenger. One of the biggest aspect, other than the $100 difference, could be the creepy Kinect Cameras which is always on and accused of intruding into the privacy of the user.

This might have pushed the hardcore gamers, who are wary of their privacy being intruded, towards PS4. Now as they keep selling, the big question ahead of Sony is how much of core gamers are still out there.

In the words of Yoshida, “As soon as we see a great sales number, our instinct tells us we should be concerned about future sales, right? Are we exhausting all the core gamers? If we sell this number of units, there are no more consumers we can sell to. That’s a really terrifying prospect.”

So actually knowing what made the customers buy the product is like shooting in a dark room. May be one of the biggest names to have been knocked out due to this is Nokia, which didn’t realize why people were in love with them.

There are numerous companies out there trying to find answer to the same question as that of Sony. In a market place where the competition is cut throat, the line of law is simple: Shape in or ship out.
