SpouseUp Founder Speaks About Finding A Match, The Tech Way

Finding a life partner may be challenging for some, and you would be knowing the trouble only if you have faced it first hand. Though we have a number of popular matrimonial websites and smartphone apps for our choice, many people still fall prey for scammers, spammers, and fake profiles.

So, where is this going to end? How to overcome the matrimonial hunt? Well, finding an answer to these questions actually led Karthik Iyer to the starting of SpouseUp, the matrimonial service which uses Facebook and other social media channels to find you a perfect life partner!

Below are excerpts of an email conversation with Karthik Iyer, Founder of SpouseUp, regarding his startup, the technology behind it, and how it works.

How did the idea of SpouseUp pop into your mind?

We had a family member who was searching for a partner but was unable to find one. They spent over 2 years and thousands of rupees, and couldn't find a relevant match. That's when we realized that there is a lack of innovation in the matchmaking industry and we could solve it with the help of Artificial Intelligence & Machine learning.

What's behind the connection between Facebook and SpouseUp?

People spend a lot of time on social networks such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Twitter. We live in an era where data is the new gold. There is so much to learn about our users and match them with more relevant people based on this data.

How Facebook helps in matching the perfect partner?

When we know all your likes and preferences such as movies, books, music, and favourite people, our artificial intelligence 'maami' can understand your profile better and match you with other relevant profiles.

How accurate is the matching?

We provide a compatibility score to our users.

What does your 360 degree personality analysis mean?

With the help of social networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook and twitter, we are able to understand a person's different sides such as professional inclinations, their views and opinions, and their interests in things like books, music etc.

How has your journey been with SpouseUp? What are the results?

I spent a good part of the last decade in Scandinavia and wanted to move back to India to add value to our society. Spouseup is a great way to give back as we are employing some of the cutting edge tech which I had learnt about in Northern Europe to solve a socially relevant problem in India.

We have tens of thousands of users and our user-base is growing. While we love India and creating cutting edge tech for the Indian market, we are facing huge hurdles when it comes to fund raising. Only few investors are inclined to invest in hard-core tech. It is harder being an entrepreneur in India than in the west.

How do you make things happen through Facebook for matching the right profiles?

We love Facebook and we use their APIs

How has the response been?

It has been pretty good. We have tens of thousands of users connecting with each other. We are hoping to become the market leader in next gen matchmaking over the next 3 years.

What are your measures to actually safeguard the privacy of your users?

We scan through a persons social media foot print and our AI gives a trust score to a user. This trust rating helps minimize the risk in the matching process. We also allow our users to upload a government id proof and are soon to integrate with Aadhar APIs.
