Oppo Unveils The R5 - The World's New Slimmest Smartphone

Measuring in at just 4.85 mm thick, the R5 steals Gionee's thunder

 

Apple is pretty competent at cutting out the bulk from its devices – look at the iPhone 6 for instance, it's remarkably thinner than its predecessor. However, there are a bunch of smartphones out there that can make the newest iPhone look obese, and Oppo's R5 leads the pack, measuring in at just 4.85 mm thick.

Oppo's Chinese counterpart Gionee has for long been obsessed with creating the world's thinnest smartphones, with its Elife S5.1 measuring just 5.15mm thick. Oppo's new R5 has just smashed that record and has breached the hold sub 5mm thick barrier that has eluded us for some time now.

Don't mistake the Oppo R5 to be just a pretty face either. The device features a 5.2-inch Full-HD AMOLED display and packs a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 SoC, coupled to 2GB of RAM. While that won't put it in contention with any of the recently launched flagship devices, it should be a pretty snappy performer nonetheless.

In terms of imaging, the R5 packs a 13MP camera at the rear and a 5MP shooter up front, both of which feature a wide f/2.0 aperture. The chip also supports LTE-A data bands, while the battery is rated at 2,000mAh. There are a few downsides with the lack of bulk – there's only 16GB of internal memory, and no microSD slot.

Another thing missing from the Oppo R5 is the 3.5 mm audio jack. You'll have to use the micro USB adaptor which comes bundled in the box or a Bluetooth headset. The device comes wrapped in a metallic frame, and uses a phase shifting material to help cool the internal components – useful, since there's a lack of material shielding your palm from the heat.

The R5 runs on Color OS 2.0, which is based on Google's Android 4.4 KitKat, and improves Oppo's gesture recognition features. The gesture panel can now be accessed by swiping up from the home button, allowing users to draw characters on the screen to launch apps.

The final trick up the Oppo R5's sleeve is VOOC rapid charging, which allows the 2000 mAh battery to be charged from 0 to about 75% in just 30 minutes. This won't require an additional quick charger, as even the one bundled with the device will manage to do it. The R5 is slated for launch in December, and will be priced at $499 in the US market, but there's no news when the device could make it to India and what it would cost.
