Apple's Beloved iPod Classic Is No More

Now that the Classic is gone, the case for Apple to continue investing in the iPod range is less strong

Every newspaper headline and blog title that contains the word “Apple” today inevitably ends up using the word “new” alongside it. However it's the 'old' we're lamenting about in this post, because (brace yourself) the Apple iPod Classic is dead.

The company has removed the iPod Classic listing from its site, as spotted by Matt Burns of TechCrunch, leaving just the Shuffle, Nano and Touch to take its place. Even though Apple fastidiously held on the the Classic, its days were long over, and it was time for its to be put down.

While the iPhone really made Apple a financial powerhouse, it was the iPod Classic that really remade Apple a household name. Moreover, with the going of the Classic, the case for the company to continue building once loved media players is certainly less strong.

The smartphone has replaced the iPod, and with the growth of music-streaming services, the market for them is quickly evaporating. I doubt many people will oppose the going of the Classic, but it's just one of those things that changed us, and we're sad to see it go.
