Place Xbox One Vertically At Your Own Risk: Microsoft

Says it isn't a cooling issue, but the slot loading Blu-ray drive wasn't designed to work vertically.

 

The Xbox One will not play well with vertical orientation, Microsoft has told Gamespot. Albert Panello, Senior Director of Product Management and Planning at Xbox, further insinuates that doing so could cause some damage to the console or the disc. Although he didn't specify exactly what the issue is, he did mention that it isn't a problem caused by the console's cooling system. That essentially leaves us with just one possible problem area — the Xbox One's slot loading Blu-ray drive, which may not be optimised for a vertical placement.

Speaking during the Tokyo Game Show Panello said, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk. It wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both," he explained absolving the cooling system. Interestingly, the PS4 too employs a similar slot-loading Blu-ray drive, but that can be used in any orientation without any issue, just like the one on its last-generation cousin — the PS3.

In an effort to placate those who like their consoles placed vertically, or rather anyone with desk/shelf space issues, Panello further added, "We found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally". Well, as far as statistics go, it seems that 20% of Xbox One owners aren't going to be happy then.

It seems old habits die hard, because Xbox 360 users too reported of game discs being scratched when the console was physically disturbed in the vertical orientation. Repeating the same mistakes of the Xbox 360 isn't a good sign; especially, considering the massive hardware issues that plagued it at launch an well until the time Microsoft released the Slim version featuring a fab shrink. Let's hope Xbox One will fare better in that respect.
