Samsung Launches GALAXY Gear For Rs 23,000

The water-resistant smartwatch is currently compatible with GALAXY Note 3.

Along with the expensive GALAXY Note 3, Samsung has launched its companion watch GALAXY Gear in India. When hooked up to a GALAXY Note 3 via Bluetooth, the Gear can make and receive phone calls. Looks like Samsung realised that the Note 3 is so big, you need a companion gadget to facilitate calls. The smartwatch features a metallic frame and plastic (non-removable) strap. The straps are available in Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green.

In terms of specs, you get an 800 MHz processor, and 512 MB of RAM. Its 1.63” screen has pixel dimensions of 320x320. There’s a 1.9 megapixel strap-mounted camera with BSI sensor. The OS onboard is not Android though, the Gear is based on Samsung’s home-brewed operating platform. It comes with a dedicated app store with 70 launch titles.

Currently, this smartwatch is only compatible with GALAXY Note 3 smartphone. In coming months, the Gear will also play nice with the S4 and Note II; post the Android 4.3 software update. The Gear will hit stores on 25th September with a price tag of Rs 23,000. So if you want to make full use of it, you’ll have to buy the GALAXY Note 3 (Rs 50,000). For me, a total of 74k for a fancy watch and huge phone is just too much to ask for. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.
