Xbox Live Will Phase Out Microsoft Points In Favour Of Local Currency

Transition will occur with the next system update; existing MSP will be automatically converted to equivalent value.

One of the major difference between digital distribution models on the PC and consoles is the way the transactions are handled. On the PC, purchasing a game or a DLC is as simple as whipping out your credit card and then you're charged the exact amount for it. However, on the consoles, you have to purchase a predetermined amount of points or add money to your "wallet", which leads to surplus money stuck in the ecosystem. Xbox Live users have to contend with the additional chore of calculating the conversion of local currency to Microsoft Points (MSP).

Apparently, Microsoft has been listening to gamers complaints, and has finally announced that Microsoft Points will be phased out from the Xbox Marketplace. Microsoft's proprietary currency's place will be taken by local currency. The revelation was made by Microsoft's Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten through a blog post.

This means you'll no longer have to calculate the conversion to MSP. Any MSP accumulated in your account will also be converted to "an amount of currency equal to or greater than the Xbox Marketplace value of your Microsoft Points". Physical instances of the points such as Xbox Gift Cards and Microsoft Point Cards are also said to be honoured, that is until further notice. That's is your cue to claim unused cards then.

We have contacted Microsoft India on the specifics of conversion to the Indian rupee and are awaiting a response, so watch this space. Although there's no specific date on the transition, it will be implemented with the next system update slated to hit "late 2013".
