Now your Android tablet can go toe-to-toe against tabs on other platforms.

3DMark, a benchmarking software previously confined to Windows PCs, has now been launched for Android. While it primarily aims to test the 3D graphics capability of a device, the software also gives a general idea of the overall system's performance. With this version, you can finally compare scores with devices running Windows 7/8, Windows RT, and iOS. 3DMark for Windows 7/8 had been released a couple of months back, and a versions for Windows RT and iOS are expected soon.

The Android version relies on OpenGL ES 2.0 API as against the DirectX 11 API on Windows, because the Microsoft API is not available on the Android platform. However, it runs Ice Storm for moderately-powered devices, and Ice Storm Extreme for high-end devices using the same benchmark with higher quality textures and post-processing effects at 1080p. While the latter is not yet included in the Windows version, it is expected to be available soon. 3DMark for Android claims to work with over a 1000 devices that meet its minimum system requirements of Android 3.1, 1 GB of RAM, OpenGL ES 2.0, and 300 MB of free space for the installation.
