Windows Phone 7.8 And Windows Phone 8 Will Be Unsupported By End-2014

Microsoft has announced the dates uptil when users of its Windows Phone 7.8 and Windows Phone 8 can expect support.

Updating its support lifecycle policy, Microsoft has said that it will support Windows Phone 7.8 until Sep9 2014 (started Feb9 2013) and its Windows Phone 8 OS until Jul8 2014 (started Dec14 2012). This update policy clarifies that mobile operating systems are offered updates for 18 months, from the start of the OS life-cycle.

This approach carries forward Microsoft's policy of declaring clear life cycles for its software products. The support period for desktop software though, is much longer, perhaps because the mobile OS is expected to get updates in quicker cycles.

Microsoft hasn't yet publicly spoken about its next mobile operating system release (after Windows Phone 8). There was an announcement that users of Windows Phone 8 can upgrade from their existing platform, hopefully there is something exciting in the next Windows Phone upgrade.

They had earlier taken note of the Live Tile Freezing issue faced by some Windows Phone 7.8 users, and also re-issued the Windows Phone 7.8 update.
