Donkey Kong Hacked To Play Princess Rescuing Mario

Dad cracks game code for his 3-year old daughter; makes it available to the world to play.

 

While the world celebrated the International Women's Day on 8th of March, one dedicated dad was busy cracking the code of the popular console game Donkey Kong for his 3-year old daughter. Apparently, his daughter Pauline didn’t like the age-old standard sexist formula of the game where a knight in shining armour rescues a damsel in distress. To make Pauline happy, her dad Mike altered the game code of the NES ROM to allow her to play as Princess Toadstool, who can now rescue Mario, for a change.

Mike had to redraw Mario's frames and swap the palettes in the ROM to do the trick. He also went on to replace the M (for Mario) at the top with a P for his daughter's name. He has also released the patch that can be downloaded from here. You will need XDELTA to apply it to the original 2010 Donkey Kong NES ROM, which you are supposed to own.
