Nikola Unveils A Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Semi Truck

The road-train promises a range of 1280 - 1900 km.

Seems like all the electric and alternative energy vehicle companies are fans of the Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla. First it was Elon Musk's Tesla motors and now it is a truck company called Nikola that came into the limelight. Like most electric vehicles Nikola's first vehicle dubbed One uses fully electric drivetrain powered by high-density lithium batteries. However, it draws energy from a hydrogen fuel cell. This gives the the Nikola One a range of 1280 - 1900 km while delivering over 1000 horsepower. On a side note, Daimler, Mercedes-Benz's parent company has been working on hydrogen fuel cell cars since early 90s. NECAR 1 was one of the first fully functional mainstream vehicle to run on Hydrogen fuel.

The futuristic truck is expected to hit the roads by 2020. Nikola will start building the manufacturing in 2017. Much like Tesla charging stations, Nikola will create a network of hydrogen fueling stations across the US and Canada. The work on which is expected to start from 2018. The company has partnered with Ryder for nationwide sales, service, and warranty. Currently, Ryder has a network of over 800 service locations in North America. Then, there's also a Nikola One leasing program that includes unlimited hydrogen fuel, warranty, and scheduled maintenance during a 72-month term.
