As more and more people switch to their first smartphone, the sub-10k category continues to drive the bulk of the sales. Thanks to some intense competition between global and Chinese brands, phones in this price segment are getting better every passing day. In fact, many find it difficult to zero-in on a device. Therefore, we are publishing a list of hand-picked handsets worth buying under Rs 10,000. (Last updated: 3-Jan-2016)
Xiaomi Redmi 3S
Prime Street Price: Rs 9000 (available via flash sales)
The Redmi 3S Prime is hands-down the best smartphone in this segment. It is a compact handset with a sleek metal-clad body. It offers 5-inch HD IPS screen. The Redmi 3S Prime is powered by a Qualcomm's Snapdragon 430 octa-core chipset, which delivers solid performance. Then, you get 3 GB RAM, 32 GB internal storage, and microSD card slot that supports up 128 GB. The phone is compatible with 4G VoLTE in India. Despite being an entry-level, it comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel snapper for selfies. Throw a fingerprint sensor and 4100 mAh battery into the mix and you get a phone that punches above its weight. The only downer with this handset is Xiaomi's incredibly annoying weekly flash sales model.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3
Street Price: Rs 10,000
Xiaomi is quite formidable when it comes to the budget smartphone category. The Redmi Note 3 shares the design with the Redmi 3S Prime. It does come with a bigger 5.5-inch Full HD IPS panel. Compared to its younger sibling, the Note 3 packs-in more powerful Snapdragon 650 chipset. It comes with 2GB RAM and 16 GB storage. The phone comes with a decent 16-megapixel camera. Connectivity essentials include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS. The handset packs-in 4000 mAh battery with fast charging. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 features a fingerprint sensor. The phone doesn't disappoint on any front, except for the software, which is still stuck at Android 5.1.1.
Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus
Street Price: Rs 8000
The third recommendation is our list also comes from China. Lenovo's Vibe K5 Plus, is a great alternative to Xiaomi's duo. The handset comes with a 5-inch Full HD IPS (In Pane Switching) panel that offers better colours and viewing angles compared to your regular LCDs. In terms of power, you get Qualcomm's Snapdragon 616 SoC (System on Chip) with Adreno 405 GPU. The phone has 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. Other features include a 13-megapixel camera, 4G LTE, WI-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, and 2750 mAh battery. Much like the Redmi 3S prime, this handset features a metal body, but does away with a fingerprint sensor. You do get Dolby sound enhancement though.
