Apple iOS 6.1 Comes Out, Is A Minor Update

The new iOS update offers bugfixes and new features, although Apple Maps is still not there yet.

Apple has announced the iOS 6.1 as a free update for iPad, iPod and iPhone users. It comes nearly three months after the first beta version of the iOS 6.1 was made available to developers. iOS 6.1 is compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad (third and fourth generation), iPad mini, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth and fifth generation).

LTE is available on iPhone 5, iPad mini and fourth generation iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models through select carriers. "iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads", said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a press release.

The iOS 6.1 firmware incorporates fixes for various bugs and the improvements below:

  • LTE support for an increased number of carriers
  • Ability to use Siri  to purchase movie tickets in the US through Fandango
  • iTunes Match subscribers can download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud
  • Apple TV set to be incorporated with Bluetooth keyboard compatibility

For those who are willing to risk hacking their phones, a jail-break for the iOS 6.1 is reportedly going to be out on Sunday. Unprecedentedly, it supports all iOS 6.1 products, unlike jail-break tools for previous iOS versions which had limitations as to the device that the tool addressed.
